Benbecula, 2002
Here’s another compilation that finds me pleasantly surprised. It’s been a long time since I last heard such a cohesive collection of melodic music. Beluga’s “Tundra” sets the tone, with poppy bass, old-school synth washes, and a lovely keyboard melody. If only it were longer. Other highlights are “Moxley Moy,” a sweet, simple piece by Christ., and “Tony Blair” by Frog Pocket, with distorted voices over a downtempo beat. There’s really not a bad track on this comp. And best of all, there’s lots of new artists to discover.
